“Do you have a speculum?”

We came back from the Bay Area yesterday evening. The drive to the Bay and the drive back both went smoothly, without snow, rain or hail. The time there, on the other hand, was anything but uneventful. The day before Christmas started very early with gastroenteritis hitting my wife and her mother. Sue’s mom recovered by early evening, but Sue was showing no sign of improvement so I took her to John Muir’s emergency room. They hooked Sue up to an IV and she slept most of the time. At some point one doctor came over and asked the nurse if the room’s supply cabinet might have the abovementionned instrument, which was needed for a nearby room’s patient. Interestingly enough, this was the very same doctor that my wife had seen earlier on Thursday when some other issue forced her to take her mom to that ER on Thursday, which is most likely how they both contracted gastroenteritis. Maybe the Universe was trying to tell us something, but we didn’t listen. By midnight, two bags of saline solution had mostly done their magic and, after picking up some anti-nausea pills at a nearby drugstore, we headed back to her parents and got some sleep. It was quite strange spending Christmas’s first hour in a not-as-deserted-as-expected drugstore, and we’re not planning an encore.

On the bright side... Sue celebrated her birthday with her sisters, and I got to meet a couple of friends. Hopefully there’ll be more of that next time we show up.
