Locus's most recent issue ran an interview with Nalo Hopkinson. I must confess never having read anything by her, for some reason. Which of her novels would you recommend starting with?

I would suggest Midnight Robber, though Brown Girl in the Ring isn't bad either.

Thanks. I had posted a similar request on Making Light and Midnight Robber is the title that came up the most frequently.

I know, I think I posted a reply to it. I think you'll find it a fascinating novel. She lives in Canada, btw.

You did indeed recommend that book on Making Light. As for Hopkinson living in Toronto, I had heard about that and the funny thing is that I may have crossed paths with her when I lived there (January 1986 thru January 1989), either at Bakka Bookstore or at the local con Ad Astra.

I am in the odd situation of never having met her, but of having met her father -- a very fine poet.

How did that come to happen? Let me guess. It is a small world.

It is a small world. I heard him read from and talk about Gerard Manley Hopkins.
