the storyteller
Oct. 9th, 2012 08:31 amBelieve it or not, I have never read a story by Peter S. Beagle.
I don’t know why that is, especially as I've never heard anything but praise about him, but this grave omission will be corrected during the Holidays, what with “The Last Unicorn” being one of the presents I just bought for my wife to give me on Christmas morning.
That being said, I have experienced one of his stories before. How can that be if I’ve never read his work? Back in 1990, Melinda Snodgrass was working on “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and Beagle – an unknown to everybody but her on the staff - came in to pitch an idea for an episode that turned out to be one of their memorable ones. Normally, Melinda would take notes as the writer went thru the pitch, but she soon found herself putting her pen away, and got to experience what people went thru in the old days when they’d sit and listen to the visiting storyteller, and she was swept in by the tale of Ambassador Sarek, whose many years have finally robbed of his mind, and all his regrets come crashing down on him, in the middle of delicate peace negotiations.
