Yes, it IS a complete coincidence that the top of my head is lined up with Mount St-Helen's. Honest. That being said, my manager just gave me my midyear review. That was strange because she took my list of achievements and added some to it that I thought were really inconsequential. Not only that, but I was praised for the Project from Hell even though it was 6 months late, and even though its daily processing had been a hog on resources, and even though it was kept alive for only the four months it took a contractor to come up with a better solution.

Go you!

And as an added benefit, I get to see what you look like!

Thanks.

Actually, I really look like Hugh Jackman. And if you believe that, I have a beachfront property in Florida you might be interested in...

I do think congratulations are in order. You obviously did a yeoman job with the Project from Hell (I am currently engaged in a project from Heck, reading a 300 page typescript of a collection of essays on globalisation and violence, some of it is amusing some is annoying -- I'm writing in dozens of corrections a page).

Good on yer, mate!

Is there an implication that you, like Mt. St. Helens, could blow your top at any time?

(I drove up there about five years after the eruption, and the blowdowns were still astonishing.)

I usually walk into job reviews expecting to get spanked even though, looking back, that hasn't happened very often. I'm not likely to forget a previous employer who wrote me up for a project that was delivered one week late even though the delay was due to my flying back to Canada for my dad's funeral. I kid you not.

That boss sounds like a less-than-human person.

Actually, it took me a long time, but I eventually realized he did that so that I'd want to leave. Which I did, a few months later. Well, it was their loss. So there.

That's true, it was their loss.

I can only hope my review goes so well, congrats! (Good pic, too)

When is your review due? Any reason to feel pessimistic?

As for the photo, there are very few pictures of me as a grownup... I mean, as a legal grownup... that I like. This is one of them. The other is in my "Serge thru time and space" gallery, and, no, I'm not referring to the one drawn by my 5-year-old nephew, although I do like that one. (You should see the one he did of Brownie and me after he was told she had died. Very sweet.)

You mean the loan you are going to make to me, free of interest, so that I can pay off the rest of our mortgage?

I think I mentioned once before that you look extraordinarily like my brother: http://www.cs.uwaterloo.ca/~jfbuss/jbuss.jpg

I'm not sure you'd said something to that effect before, but I see what you mean. This reminds me of when I was about 25 when 20-years-olds would approach me, thinking I was my younger brother. I thought that was amusing in spite of my bro being a jerk. (My wife has similar words to describe him.)

It was over on Making Light after you linked to a picture of yourself.

People used to mistake me for my sister (and vice versa) all the time. Mostly people who didn't know either of us very well.

I take it that your relationship with your sister was a bit less than cordial.

In our younger years, but that's not what I meant. It's just that we don't really look all *that* much alike. Anyone who'd spent much time around either of us would know that our hair colors were totally different, to point out the most obvious difference.

My brothers, on the other hand, looked so much alike in boyhood that the family is still arguing about who's in which picture.

I stand corrected.
