I met with my friend Yoko last night. We got stuck in a traffic jam all the way from Oakland to Lafayette, on our way to that Thai restaurant in Pleasant Hill, but it was a chance to catch up since my last visit to the Bay Area. Yoko and I worked for the same... ah... people when I moved to the Bay Area in January 1989. Boy, did we burn a lot of midnight oil that year. The project wasn't quite of an infernal nature, but it was close. On the bright side... It showed that we worked well together. Also, if not for its forcing us into an all-nighter after which our manager told us to go home, we'd have been stranded in San Francisco when the earthquake hit.

Anything else?

If I can, tonight, I'll see if I can take a photo of that Martian Brain Spider I noticed not far from the Oakland BART Station.

Hmm, that 'ah... people' contains so much meaning.

Of course I wasn't implying that some of the managers at that place were more mean than inhuman Martian Brain Spiders. Of course not.

Meeting up with old friends is great, isn't it?

Martian Brain Spider? Like a Kaldane from Bantoom?

Not quite. It has less to do with Burroughs's Mars than with Wells's. But be perplexed no more for, tonight, instead of taking BART straight from San Francisco to the East Bay's Concord, I shall make a brief stop in Oakland and take a photo of that dreaded mechanical creature. My blog's readers won't be able to say I don't go out of my way (literally) for them.

Your sacrifice is noted, appreciated, and anticipated!

I do hope this doesn't turn into a literal Sacrifice to Mars's darkest gods.

I'm guessing that you're seeing the sculpture I.T., located where The Crucible had their Fire Arts Festival last weekend.

Does this look familiar?

We have a couple of pics of IT on the picture journal I'd mentioned.

It is indeed the Crucible. And a big abject oops on my part for not having noticed the link you had posted on your own blog, Kathryn.

no worries- the picture of IT was about 3 layers in from my LJ post on BurningMan.

IT is a lovely bit of craftsmanship. The central ring 'ladder' makes it look like people climbing up are being beamed up to the brain.

It is pretty awesome.

I did manage to photograph it last night as the BART train zipped by, but my shot was nowhere near as good as the ones you linked to. I may still inflict it upon this blog - accompanied by your links if that's OK wth you.
