The latest about Sue's knee surgery… A couple of days ago, she started walking around without crutches. The limp is noticeable, but it looks less like Igor and more like Doctor Zaius. That's an improvement. And she can drive by herself, which filled me with great trepidation at first as it is her right knee that was worked upon, and I dreaded what would happen if she had to brake suddenly. The followup with her surgeon was yesterday and he's quite happy with the way things are going, what with her having full range of movement. She still feels some pain when she walks around, but things will get better. Physical therapy begins next week. She's going to love that although it'll be more pleasant than yesterday when someone pulled the stitches from inside that tiny hole next to her kneecap.

*shudder*

One of my younger brothers once crashed into a parked car on his bicycle--the impact was sharp enough that his knee popped right open. Took eight staples to close it up again.

Ewww...

I hope he didn't suffer permanent damage.

I once crashed into a car with my bicycle (see my entry of Sept 21), but came out of it unharmed. A few years ago, I took a curve too fast with another bicycle, which started skidding, and I landed on my right knee. It hurt like Hell, but there was no damage. It was disconcerting though to do leg presses at the gym and feel my shin pop around a bit. I've been one very lucky person.

Off-topic... You'll love today's strip by xkcd, especially the part about the EMP cannon.

I'm looking for a different device, one that would insert knowledge permanently into students -- so that I don't get told that Charles de Gaulle is the current ruler of France, or that France was ruled by kings prior to 1958.

Zombie de Gaulle? Lumbering along crying 'Cervauxxxxxxxxx!'?

At least they know of de Gaulle. They could have said that Edith Piaf was Présidente of France.

They know nothing of the Sparrow. On the other hand, one student on a multiple choice test I gave today decided that Anne Frank was the current German head of government (that student was outnumbered by the ones who said that Konrad Adenauer was). I'm now beginning to be concerned at the zombiefication of Europe.

When the docs reattached my patellar tendon to the kneecap after my unfortunate encounter with plate glass, they used wire. A year or so later there was occasion to x-ray the knee, and we discovered that the single piece of wire had broken/disintegrated into four separate pieces. I haven't tried going through an airport screening device since then, but it might be amusing.

From what I can tell, Sue hasn't had any permanent implantation of a foreign object, so presumably she won't have to deal with that.

I take it it'd be more painful to take the wire bits out than leaving them in. As for Sue, no foreign object was implanted. Thank goodness for that I presume her recovery would have been lengthier if they had done more than cleaning things up and doing what's called a lateral release on the nearby tendons.

I dunno. It's more a cost issue than a pain issue, given that my procedure co-pay is 50%. Ever since the accident the knee has felt like it was the inner portion of a piston, with a sleeve sliding up and down. Not painful, but annoying. It's got full range of motion, so I live with it.
