I'll confess that, when TCM shows 1940's "The Shop Around the Corner" or its remake, 1949's "In the Good Old Summertime", I prefer the latter even though I prefer the former's James Stewart & Margaret Sullavan to Van Johnson & Judy Garland. Why is that? The original's main relationship is quite abrasive and mean-spirited and, come to think of it, so are its subplots. Maybe it's a flaw in my character, but I get more pleasure out of a story where there is a twinkle thru the whole affair. Which may have come from Van Johnson treating unhappy Judy Garland with kindness.
