looking for things

Every once in a while, Sue will misplace something - her debit card, her car keys. I'll ask if she sees a stack of this-or-that and, if she does, I'll suggest that she look under said stack, which quite often turns out where the misplaced object is.
All this to say that I should listen to my own advice because I finally found the paperback of Allen Steele's space opera "Hex" I had misplaced days ago. Under one of the couches's pile of cushions. It has suffered a bit from being sat against, but that doesn't affect the story itself, which I have resumed reading.
