So, they needed Superman if they wanted to defeat Steppenwolf and, in the end, all they needed from him was his cold breath, which made the bad guy's axe brittle. It seems like it'd have been safer for the Flash to toss a container of liquid oxygen at Steppenwolf rather than risk bringing back Superman as yet another zombie Kryptonian.
