Next in the Season's movie-watching last night was 1947's "Miracle on 34th Street".

"But... but maybe he's only a little crazy like painters or composers or... or some of those men in Washington."

Yay! I love that movie!

Have you see The Shop Around the Corner?

Yup. It was on Turner Classic Movies a couple of weeks ago. Hmmm... Strictly speaking, The Little Shop could be considered the opening shot of my Holidays movie-watching, not White Christmas.

I have it on DVD (and Miracle too - both the original and Richard Attenborough versions). We watch them every Christmas :)

I've managed to not see this film ever, for some reason. Not through deliberate avoidance, I hasten to add.

Last night, though, Gail and I, through dint of going to bed early, watched the whole of The Princess Bride. Whereat we were both very pleased.

You should take a look at that version of 34th Street. It's cute. And so is the very young Natalie Wood.

Why oh why does Hollywood insist on remaking classics, as they did with this one in 1994?

Never mind, rhetorical question. But still.

I'm sure there are people who remake things because they loved the original, and they want the younger generations to love it too, but done with modern means. But, as local writer George RR Martin said at our con, he dreads the day when someone will remake Forbidden Planet because they'll probably (bleep) it up.

AMC (or something like it) does a twenty-four hour marathon of that on... Christmas Day? I think Christmas Eve is A Christmas Story on some other channel. The guys in my family like A Christmas Story, then Dad and I are the only ones who get really into 34th Street. Most years, we get the timing down such that we can watch the little girl from Rotterdam every two hours and other good parts at least once each, though not in sequence.

I've seen A Christmas Story in bits and pieces, and it was ok, but not really my thing. I can understand why most guys would like it. Me? Shrug.

As for AMC's running 34th Street on and on and on... Are they trying to do to it what was done to It's A Wonderful Life? By the way, I'm one of the people who still love that movie. The happy endings of Capra's movies have been made fun of, but his characters go thru Hell before they get some Justice.

Both Christmas Story and 34th Street have been marathoned some years running, but I still like them as much as I ever did-- 'eh' on Christmas Story, 'whoo' on 34th Street. I've never seen more than the very end of It's a Wonderful Life.

Natalie Wood, née Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko in San Francisco, sure was a cutie, and a darn good child actress. Those what-kind-of-BS-are-you-trying-to-feed-me looks of hers were priceless.
