Why oh why does Hollywood insist on remaking classics, as they did with this one in 1994?

I'm sure there are people who remake things because they loved the original, and they want the younger generations to love it too, but done with modern means. But, as local writer George RR Martin said at our con, he dreads the day when someone will remake Forbidden Planet because they'll probably (bleep) it up.
