"I'm not stupid, I'm not expendable, and I'm not going."
- Avon on Blake's Seven.

Meanwhile, yesterday was a strange day. This last weekend, I was on call for our monthly cycle. And working on the Project from Hell on the same server. With all the delays that my Project caused to the monthly, I was sure that, thru the wonders of telecommuting, I'd get my bottom whipped. What happened instead? My boss congratulated me in front of everybody during our staff neeting for keeping everything going and eventually ending successfully. It then got more bizarre. When I later asked for a day off on February 26, he/she asked if it could be rescheduled. That day apparently is the day of my yearly review and they'll pay to fly me in. It means that, in spite of the Project's problems, he/she's not likely to give me a bad review. Doing that on the phone would be easier. And cheaper.

Weird.

So, that day, instead of a colonoscopy, I'll get reviewed.

Fly you into where?

The colonoscopy is annoying (well, preparing for it is, and you need half a day or so afterwards to recover), but a free trip sounds nice.

From Albuquerque to San Francisco where, when you use public transportation, you're more likely to see beautiful ladies than listen to two guys discussing their respective criminal records.

That happens on the bus in Albuquerque?

No foolin'. I've overheard such exchanges a few times, the latest being yesterday.

One learns many interesting things on public transport, that's for sure.

Hey, come over to Vancouver, you'll see lots of lovely ladies on transit any time. Any pretty boys in San Francisco (wait, this is San Francisco I'm talking about, do I really have to ask?)

Vancouver... San Francisco... There must be something about the West Coast.

Yes, but neither Seattle nor Portland has such a great reputation for pulchritude.

On the other hand, Katie Sackhoff, who plays Starbuck on Battlestar Galactica, is from Portland. She's unusual, which is one thing that makes her attractive. To me, anyway.

But on a train in Atlanta you can fall into a conversation with a perfect stranger and discover that you'd gone to school together three decades (plus) earlier.

I see lovely ladies (and pretty boys) on public transport in Atlanta all the time (including, this past Saturday, a rather clumsy attempt by a young man to chat up a young lady).

Did that bring back fond memories of your own youth?

Of the 'Was I ever that dumb?' variety? Not really. I never walked up to a young woman and asked her if she believed in love at first sight.

That goes beyond clumsy, and beyond dumb. Even yours truly was never that socially inept.

I'd hardly call you socially inept.

Thanks for saying so, but why do you think I was a late bloomer?
