the Doctor and the Blue Sky

I wonder how many other Rock songs made it into "Doctor Who" - besides the Beatles, that is.

grease begone

Whatever caused my first-ever bursitis on Friday night, the swelling is all gone, and so is my elbow grease. Mind you, I always have plenty of metaphorical elbow grease when it's needed.

"Cast A Deadly Spell"

1991's "Cast A Deadly Spell" most likely was a movie ahead of its time. Directed by Martin Campbell (later better known for "Mask of Zorro" and "Casino Royale"), it starred Fred Ward as late-1940s gumshoe Phil Lovecraft, hired by a wealthy client played by David Warner to protect his daughter against occult threats. You see, after the Great War, American soldiers brought back home other things besides venereal diseases, which is why some cars are powered by trolls, and some of Los Angeles's housing developments are being built by zombie workers.

Nowadays, the mashups of various genres are fairly common. Back then, not so much and people probably didn't know what to make of it so it sank into oblivion. This isn't the first time I've written about the film, but today I discovered that it *was* released on DVD in 2001. Alas it's hard to get until one is willing to shell out $65. Well, maybe when I feel a bit richer...

singin' in the rain

It hasn't even stopped raining and already toads have come out of the desert's ground and are calling each other to have sex.

John Paul Jones

"Captain, are you surrendering? Do you ask for quarter?"
"No sir! I have not yet *begun* to fight!"

Tonight we watched 1959's "John Paul Jones". It was entertaining, but the events were probably highly inaccurate, as these films tend to be. The ships *looked* more accurate though - in most of the scenes set below deck, Robert Stack would have cracked his skull open if he'd tried walking upright.
