Starting at 3amPT tomorrow, Turner Classic Movies will be showing the following movies:

They Came From Beyond Space
From the Earth to the Moon
First Men in the Moon
Twelve to the Moon
Destination Moon
The Mouse on the Moon
Have Rocket, Will Travel
Moon Pilot
A Trip to the Moon
For All Mankind
The Right Stuff
Marooned
Capricorn One

Some of them I already own on DVD. One I have no wish to see ever again and you can probably guess which one. I'll probably record most of the remaining ones onto my DVR, especially Disney's Moon Pilot, which I haven't seen since I was a young teen, but not so long ago that I forgot that the alien lady was quite cute.

As for why those movies will be on TCM, you do remember what happened on that date, 40 years ago, right?

I've never heard of most of them--which one are you avoiding and why?

Capricorn One's premise is that NASA fakes a mission to Mars then tries to kill to astronauts. You can imagine why I dislike that movie.

As for the other movies... It'd take too long to explain what they're about, but I highly recommend First Men in the Moon. It's based on HG Wells's novel of the same title, where Victorians use antigravity to fly to the Moon, where they encounter a hive society of intelligent insects living under the surface.

And if you STILL want details about the other movies, well, we WILL meet at the worldcon, right?

You left out the fact that Capricorn One also features O.J. Simpson; one more reason, not that you needed any.

Ah yes... A few years ago, The Towering Inferno was on TV and there was a weird feeling in watching him play a building security guard who saves a kitty for the flames. Kind of like watching a very young Robert Blake in Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

Ew. No, I don't want to see that movie either. And yes--by hook or by crook, we WILL.

There are times I do wish I watched television.

Missing is, _The Dish_ from 2000.

Believe it or not, I've NEVER seen The Dish. Personally, I'd have come up with a slightly different lineup if TCM had let me. I'd have added Apollo XIII and Contact. True, the latter isn't about the Moon, but it definitely is about boldly going Out There.

I liked The Dish -- it's less serious than some of the others.

Yes- it seems to be pretty accurate, too- a possibly right computer, and a frequency counter actually showing an S-band frequency.

They actually made a movie out of Wibberley's "Mouse on the Moon?" Oh my.

I loved the books. Grand Duchy of Fenwick indeed.

I've never seen this movie, not so amazingly - I'm not sure it's ever been shown on TCM (or on AMC in its glory days). Margaret Rutherford is in it, by the way.

I've never seen the movie, but the books are terrific.

I didn't even know the movies were based (loosely?) on books.

Thanks for the heads up. After watching the Lunar Landing: conspiracy theory over the weekend, I'd like to watch Capricorn One again :)

No, you fool!

By the way, did you ever see the episode of MythBusters where they went thru the main points of the conspiracy and debunked them? That was quite interesting.

I watch Mythbusters from time to time, but I didn't see that episode.

I'm not saying I believe the conspiracy theory - I think you'd have to see the evidence first-hand to make an informed decision - but I remember enjoying Capricorn One when it came out. I'd like to see it again.

My apologies. I wasn't suggesting your belief in the conspiracy. I was just wondering about your having seen that MB episode, what with your interest in the subject.

Lol, I just saw the conspiracy thing at the weekend, and wondered if it inspired the movie, or vice versa.
