I just finished a wonderful fantasy book after being woken up at midnight for a quick question by a co-worker. Time to get back to sleep, which should be easy after having had little sleep since Friday morning. Unfortunately my ancestry has passed on to me the ability to be functional even after a very short nap.

Oracle sucks.

After my 12:54am post, I had expected that sleep would be long in coming. That turned to be quite true because, one minute after that post went up, I received an email from another group regarding the feed we provide them. Since this is the group whose manager thinks highly of me, I couldn't say this'd have to wait. Besides, I *am* a schmuck of the responsible kind. By 7:00am, I had fixed the problem with the feed's generator script and had restarted the process. That should have been the end of it, except for our Oracle database, whidch decided to interact with the feed's generator in the slowest possible way. A few hours and a dedicated database administrator later, things finally started speeding up. By 1:00pm, we were done. I had gotten an unexpected 30-minute nap late in the morning so I now feel all invigorated and can spend the rest of the day's waking hours in the manner I had hoped for.

"Troll"

"My name is Harry Potter Jr."

When the Potter Family moves into that appartment building in San Francisco, Harry Jr quickly notices that things aren't quite normal around the place. For one thing, his baby sister is acting like she's been replaced by a troll. Oh, and one of the upstairs tenants is an old lady who talks to her mushroom, which talks back to her. I passed on "Troll" when it came out in 1986, thinking it was yet another horror flick of the era the purpose of which was to show creative ways to harm people. Author Carrie Vaughn recently mentionned it on FaceBook as something she remembered fondly, and it indeed turned out to be a pleasant little affair. Extra treats include Sonny Bono being turned into a forest, and we get to see a young Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

"What's going on out there?!"
"I don't know, but I *am* listening to that tree."

"You see, Logan, we're not as alone as you think."

After watching "X-men United" tonight, I have come to see some elements as working better than when I first saw it in 2003. One flaw about which I haven't changed my mind was their decision to keep Cyclops away from Jean thru most of the plot. As a result, his grief at the end comes across as the audience being asked to accept it without the strong basis it should have had. Faulty drama writing.
